Get to know our local health and wellness professionals in the Twin Cities. We asked local sound and energy healer Caty Brown to share a little about her business and what she loves about practicing in the Twin Cities.
Tell us about your business. What do you do?
I am a certified Sound Healer, Reiki practitioner, Labor and Birth Doula and yin yoga instructor. I work with people one on one and facilitate large group healings and create and collaborate with other healers on local wellness events, I also volunteer in schools providing sound healing.
As a doula, I assist women in creating their most empowered child birth experience, support them fully in their choices, provide emotional support and labor support.
What drew you to this work?
Self Care became a spiritual practice for me and a roadmap back to my true self. If I’m ever feeling low energy or stuck, I know I can come back to my rituals to align myself.
I was introduced to yoga when I was a teenager but it wasn’t until I became pregnant five years ago that I started making it a regular practice, I had discovered that I had been detached from my own body for most of my life.
When I’m doing yoga, I find myself releasing old constructs and self limiting beliefs and become more embodied in my physical experience, calmer in my mind and more awake. I always feel a cathartic release after a yoga session, it’s self therapy for me where I’m able to release anything that no longer serves me.
I got into sound healing a few years ago, I started attending soundbaths regularly when I was living in L.A. I always felt so restored after, like coming out of a great massage where I feel so connected in my mind/body/soul.
I also really appreciated the community that gathered, it felt like a safe home or like a support group that doesn’t share their experience, but you can feel it. You can feel everyone’s heart in the room. People from all walks of life coming together to set an intention to heal and create more space for love in their lives, to live more from the heart. It’s a beautiful and magical experience that brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it!
When I decided to move back to Minneapolis last fall, I knew I wanted to bring Sound Healing with me. I found a certification program in L.A. and finished a couple weeks before I moved here.
I completed my Doula training and placenta encapsulation program this summer at Blooma, I have wanted to be a doula since my first child birth. I gave birth at home after laboring for 3 days, I was assisted by two midwives and it was the best experience of my life. The pain felt unending and I was terrified at times but ultimately, I learned to surrender fully to something outside of what I’ve ever known.
After my experience, I felt fully connected to myself and my heart, I was forever changed and felt intuitively guided ever since. I want every woman to feel this way when she gives birth, no matter what they chose- I want them to feel fully empowered, strong and supported.
What do you love about your job?
My favorite thing about what I do is feeling the heart expansion after a healing session. I hold space for others to explore themselves and I enjoy learning about their journeys and hearing their dreams and visions of a better future. It inspires me in many ways- to keep advocating, healing, connecting others and sharing experiences. I want to create more events for people to come and heal and feel safe showing up as their true selves.
What results can people see when they work with you? What’s possible?
I see many of my clients come out of a sound healing feeling well rested, better connected to themselves and the world around them and more inspired in their work and lives. If you are experiencing writers block or repetitive thinking, you can expect to feel more clear, present, and guided in your visions. You can always count on a great nights sleep afterwards.
What do you wish more people understood about what you do?
That simply dedicating the time to take care of yourself and set an intention can be a powerful experience. Living through your heart is living consciously- by making choices that make you feel good and honoring your intuition. Self care is an empowerment journey. Self trust is self love. We all deserve more self love, self trust and balance in our lives!
What’s fascinating you right now?
I have been studying about hypnosis and would love to add that into my sound healing meditations at some point. I have been focusing on creating more local sound baths outdoors and providing virtual support. I have a fun project I’m working on with another musician friend where we are blending different genres of music, several different instruments together and guided meditations for a whole new sound experience. We are working on recording this but eventually, I would love to plan a private concert/sound experience for the public.
What does self care look like to you right now?
Deep breathing, Yoga, dancing with my kids, journaling and listening to music.
What do you love about living and working in the Twin Cities?
I live by Lake Harriet and I love spending time there, walking through the gardens and the hidden paths of the “magical forest” with my kids and our dog. I love all the small businesses, cafes, art studios, consignment shops and magic shops.
It really feels like a place where you can come and live the life you want to create. I find it natural to connect with others when I’m out, I love the people of Minneapolis, I continue to be inspired everyday!
Favorite local restaurants?
Amazing Thailand. I order pumpkin curry a few times a month and my kids love it too!
