Get to know Mindy Haukedahl, a licensed counselor and marriage and family therapist, offering specialized diagnostic ADHD testing and accommodation planning and Brain-Mapping/Neurofeedback services.
Tell us about your business. What do you do?
I own Afton Therapy, a mental health practice specializing in individual psychotherapy, diagnostic Testing for ADHD and brain-mapping/neurofeedback.
I focus on personal assets and strengths as a pathway to growth. By focusing on what an individual “can do” as opposed to “fixing” what is wrong, the journey becomes easier and more fulfilling for all individuals.
How do you approach your area of expertise that makes you different?
I am highly educated with extensive training in all current and most sought after forms of treatment. I analyze data and look at the whole picture for the mind, body and soul in order to best help clients work through and navigate life’s stressors.
What drew you to this work?
I am empathetic and extremely passionate about helping others.
“As an educator, I also am well versed in understanding the educational system when an accommodation plan should be put into place at school as well as support on standardized assessments such as the ACT.”
Mindy Haukedahl, MA, LSC, EdS, LMFT
What do you love about your job?
I love watching clients overcome challenges that they previously experienced. When clients come to my office for an appointment, full of smiles and positivity, my heart melts!
Who is a best fit for your services?
Teens and adults who experience anxiety, depression, ADHD, sleep disturbances and relational issues.
What results can people see when they work with you? What’s possible?
They can see the difference in brain functioning through pre and post brain maps through neurofeedback training. Anything and everything is possible!
What do you wish more people understood about what you do?
That brain mapping/neurofeedback is crucial in aiding holistic healing for clients. Along with accurate and detailed diagnostic testing for ADHD.
As an educator, I also am well versed in understanding the educational system when an accommodation plan should be put into place at school as well as support on standardized assessments such as the ACT.
What’s fascinating you right now?
Neurofeedback and brain healing!!!
In what ways do you find yourself working with other health + wellness professionals?
I can see other therapists who feel “stuck” when working with clients, collaborate with me to see what is going on in the brain through mapping. Once we see where the issue occurs in the brain, we can work together to create the best treatment plan. I can also assist other clients who work with clients who experience issues with hyperactivity, attention, focus, and distractibility. Other therapists can do therapy, but I can do accurate testing.
What does self care look like to you right now?
Taking a long bath and reading a great book!
What do you love about living and working in the Twin Cities?
There’s something so comforting about this state for me. Minnesota has always given me a sense of hygge, or coziness, both inside and outside. I went to school and worked for a while out of state, and I felt pulled to come back a few years ago. I love the community here, I love the outdoor space, trees, and lakes that are integrated into the city. Minnesota has always been home for me.
